Google Business Profile for contractors: the 14-point checklist.

Your GBP is the single highest-ROI free marketing asset you have. It's also where most contractors lose ground to competitors who actually pay attention. Fix these 14 settings this week.

14 points. One afternoon.

Why GBP outperforms paid ads, every time

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the listing that shows up in the local "map pack" - the three businesses Google highlights above the regular search results for any local-intent query. Map-pack rankings convert at 3-8× the rate of organic results and dominate mobile screens.

It's free. It takes one afternoon to optimize properly. And most of your competitors haven't done it. The 14 points below close that gap.

Fundamentals (the boring stuff that decides ranking)

1. Business name - exact match, no keyword stuffing. Use your real legal business name. "Hammond Build Co. - Austin's Best Kitchen Remodeler" gets you suspended. Just "Hammond Build Co."

2. Primary category - your most-searched service. "General Contractor" is too generic. "Kitchen Remodeler," "Plumber," "Roofing Contractor" - pick the specific one your top customer searches.

3. Secondary categories - every legitimate service. Add up to 9 more. Each one creates a ranking surface. Don't add unrelated ones (Google penalizes), but don't be shy about real services.

4. Service area, set correctly. Don't say "everywhere." Specify exact cities and zip codes - and only ones you actually serve. Google rewards focused service areas.

5. NAP consistency - exactly the same as your website. Name, address, phone. Comma placement matters. "St." vs "Street" matters. Audit it.

6. Hours - including holidays. Update for every holiday and seasonal change. "Holiday hours" is one of Google's quality signals.

Content layer (most contractors skip these)

7. Services list - every individual offering. Add each service as a discrete entry. Each with its own description (use buyer-language, not industry jargon).

8. Products - yes, even for contractors. Most contractors think the Products section is for retailers. It's not. Add packages, project types, even free consultations as "products." Each gets a photo, description, and price (or price range). It's a massive ranking signal that 90% of contractors ignore.

9. Photos - 20 minimum, refreshed monthly. Geotagged photos of real projects. Mix interior, exterior, before/after, team, equipment. Avoid stock. Google's algorithm reads photo metadata.

10. Posts - weekly cadence. The "Updates" tab is criminally underused. Post weekly: a project finished, a special offer, a how-to tip, a team milestone. Each post is a ranking ping.

11. Q&A - pre-populate the top 5 questions. Don't wait for customers to ask. You can ask and answer your own questions (yes, this is allowed). Cover pricing, process, timeline, service area, warranty.

Engagement (the active lever)

12. Reviews - request, respond, repeat. Build a workflow that auto-requests reviews 24 hours after every completed job. Respond to every review within 48 hours, positive or negative. Aim for 3-5 new reviews per month.

13. Booking link - if you accept appointments. Add your Calendly or scheduling URL. Customers can book directly from the GBP card. Reduces friction massively.

14. Attributes - fill all the relevant ones. Women-owned, veteran-owned, identifies as Black-owned, Latino-owned, etc. Wheelchair accessible, accepts new patients, online appointments - anything that applies. Each attribute is a filter customers use; missing one means missing the visibility.

The 90-day GBP audit

Run through this list every 90 days. Settings drift, competitors update, Google adds new fields. The maintenance is the moat.

A note on tracking

GBP Insights (the free analytics) shows you views, search queries, calls, and direction requests. Look at it monthly. If "search queries" includes terms you don't have a service or post for, add them. The data is free and most contractors never look.
